Document Root Changes

Updating the document root folder for a domain name changes the actual location in which the site is stored. Your primary domain is rooted in the public_html folder by default, while Addon Domains are rooted to public_html/addondomain.com.

Change Document Root for an Addon or Subdomain

To change the document root for an addon or subdomain, you can do the following:

  1. Log into cPanel.
  2. In the Domains section, click Addon Domains or Subdomains depending on which you'd like to modify.
  3. In the Modify Domain section at the bottom of the page, click the  icon next to the current document root for the domain you wish to modify.
  4. In the popup window, enter the new document root and click Change.

Change Document Root for a Primary Domain

It is not recommended to change the primary domain's document root. This can be done, but within a cpanel environment can cause large issues, so will not be performed on shared hosting.

You may request to modify the primary domain, or username, if possible however.
