Understanding Hidden Files

Hidden Files

In the world of Linux and Unix, hidden file and folder names start with a dot (.) before the file or folder name. This also applies to cPanel.

An example of some hidden files:

  • .htaccess
  • .htpasswd
  • .bashrc

How to view Hidden Files

When using cPanel's inbuilt File Manager, you cannot see hidden files and folders unless you select the option to show hidden files when opening the File Manager. To view hidden (dotfiles):

  1. Click the File Manager icon which appears under Files in cPanel
  2. Tick the box that is shown circled in the graphic below
  3. click Go

File Manager will now launch and all hidden (dotfiles) will be visible.
