How do I import a database?

Follow

You can import a database using a few methods. One of the easier ways is using the MyPHPadmin feature built into Plesk and cPanel.

Importing a database in cPanel

  1. Log into the cPanel which holds the website you want to import the database for
  1. In cPanel, you will need to create a database in which you will import the data into it. Click on Mysql databases

  1. In mysql, create a new database with a name of your choosing.

Note: Databases have the prefix of your cPanel username followed by an underscore, then the database name. This may mean that you will need to change the database name in your PHP config file.

  1. Once created, you will need to create a user that has appropriate permissions to the database. Enter in a user for the database of your choosing and a password for that user.

Note:  This user and password may also need to be updated in the PHP config file.

  1. When the user is created, you can then put that user into the new database. When you enter them into the database, you will be asked what permissions to give the user. If you are unsure what permissions this user should have, you can either check what credentials the previous database user had on the old host, consult with the documentation you have for the site or you will need to consult with your website developer.

Now that the database is created, we can import the other databases content into it.

  1. Back in cPanel, click on phpMyAdmin. It will load in another tab/page.

  1. On the left hand side of the screen, you will see the new database in the list. Click on the database.
  1. Once selected, click on import

  1. Click to browse for the database to upload and select the database you wish to import. Once selected, click go.

Note: If the database is larger than 50MB size, you will need to have Servers Australia import the database for you. For that, just upload the database file into the home folder (/) by using FTP and then email support@serversaustralia.com.au to let us know to import the database for you.

Success! The database is imported. Don’t forget to update your PHP config files if you need to.
